Meet the boys in ballet

This month we launched the Ballet Boys Project, a project designed to address the global decline of boys in ballet and dance. Since 2020 the Queensland Ballet Academy has seen a 36% decline in male students, a consistent downward trend that has been felt across the industry. We are taking this decline very seriously by taking a market leading stand and addressing what is potentially a sustainability issue for our artform. Our hope is that this new initiative will give students the opportunity to forge new friends, enjoy a safe and encouraging environment and be inspired by other boys and men pursuing their love of dance in our incredible facilities.

To celebrate the launch, we spoke with some of the male dancers within the company and asked what inspired them to start dance.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and perform. Long before we performed on this land, it played host to the dance expression of our First Peoples. We pay our respects to their Elders — past, present and emerging — and acknowledge the valuable contribution they have made and continue to make to the cultural landscape of this country.
