Messa da Requiem

Glasshouse Theatre, QPAC

Where music, movement, and mortality collide.

Renowned choreographer, Christian Spuck, transforms Verdi’s masterpiece into a sculpture of living art and music in Ivan Gil-Ortega’s first curated season as artistic director. Premiering as the first production in QPAC’s new Glasshouse Theatre - and marking its Queensland debut - Messa da Requiem explores the inner depths of human emotion, blurring the lines between life, loss and the mystery beyond.

From the powerful swell of more than 110 singers and musicians to 36 Queensland Ballet artists embodying the music in movement, this unforgettable staging is both epic and intimate - transcending boundaries and merging artforms in this once‑in‑a‑generation production.

#Behind the production

Uncover the vision behind Ivan Gil-Ortega’s first Queensland Ballet production as artistic director - Messa da Requiem.

#Reviews

“The chorus, singers and dancers are woven together equally, and are on stage together for most of the sections, with the dancers giving physical embodiment to the themes.”

- Dance Australia

“This is not an evening of ballet or music, this is a total work of art.”

- Tages-Anzeiger on Ballett Zürich

“Verdi’s music is categorically sublime, and the Zurich Philharmonie expanded his colourful contrasts, giving us both outlandish drama and lulling, soporific melodies to absolute perfection.”

- Bachtrack on Ballett Zürich

“This contrast, between bodies swarming en masse and couples gracefully entwined in something not far removed from Swan Lake, is what Messa da Requiem is made of.”

- InReview, Ballett Zürich

“....as captivatingly dramatic as Verdi’s operas. The quietest whispers develop into colossal, climactic moments that push both the chorus and the orchestra to give everything they have.”

- Ooppera Baletti on Finnish National Opera and Ballet

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and perform. Long before we performed on this land, it played host to the dance expression of our First Peoples. We pay our respects to their Elders — past, present and emerging — and acknowledge the valuable contribution they have made and continue to make to the cultural landscape of this country.
