Exploring Garry Stewart’s Elastic Hearts


This 1.5-hour afternoon professional learning workshop introduces teachers to Garry Stewart’s new work Elastic Hearts, created for Queensland Ballet. Teachers will gain insight into Stewart’s choreographic process, learn adapted repertoire, and explore choreographic tasks inspired by professional rehearsal practice. The workshop concludes with the opportunity for discussion and Q&A with a member of the Elastic Hearts creative team and a special invitation to watch a section of the show’s technical rehearsal.

Learning Outcomes – PD Workshop: Exploring Elastic Hearts:

- Gain understanding of Garry Stewart’s choreographic process and rehearsal methods.

- Learn adapted Elastic Hearts  repertoire suitable for Years 7–12.

- Trial Stewart’s choreographic tasks and explore classroom adaptations.

- Reflect on ways to scaffold professional practice into curriculum and assessment.

- Engage in discussion with a member of the Elastic Hearts  Creative team.

- Strengthen connections between contemporary industry practice and classroom teaching.

Mapped to AITSL Standards 2.1, 3.4, 6.2–6.4 and 7.4, the session blends theory and practice to equip teachers with practical strategies for classroom application and curriculum delivery across Years 7–12, with explicit connections to QCAA Senior Dance and ACARA: The Arts (Dance) Version 9.

Special Invitation: Stay to watch the Technical Rehearsal of Elastic Hearts at HOTA: 6:00pm – 8:00pm. (Please note that this is a working Technical Rehearsal, and the Artistic team may pause the run to provide notes to dancers and technical crew as required.)
