Eva Kong

Soprano

Australian/Korean soprano Eva Kong is known for her clear, lyrical voice and expressive stage presence across a diverse repertoire of operatic and concert works.

Eva has appeared in leading roles throughout Australia. For Opera Australia, she has sung the title role in Madama Butterfly, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Gilda in Rigoletto, Laura in Luisa Miller, Princess Linetta in The Love for Three Oranges and Giannetta in L’elisir d’amore. Her portrayal of Laura earned her a Green Room Award. Additional appearances for the company include Liù in Turandot and High Priestess in Aida (Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour), Madama Mao in The Nixon Tapes, Flowermaiden and Esquire in Parsifal, and several roles in Sydney Opera House – The Opera.

Born in South Korea, Eva made her debut as Violetta in La traviata in Seoul and later sang the title role in Manon with Korea National Opera. Now based in Brisbane, she has appeared regularly with Opera Queensland in roles such as Donna Anna, the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, and Kumudha in A Flowering Tree, as well as in Opera at Jimbour and Rossini’s Stabat Mater. She has also featured as the soprano soloist in Britten’s War Requiem with the Brisbane Chorale.

Eva received a Green Room Award for Best Female in a Supporting Role for her commanding performance as Madame Mao in Nixon in China with Victorian Opera. Other notable roles include Pamina in The Magic Flute, Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, and Amina in La sonnambula for Pacific Opera.

On the concert platform, Eva has taken the soprano solos in Carmina Burana and sung La Charmeuse in Thaïs for the Melbourne Symphony. She has appeared in Iris dévoilée with the Sydney Symphony, Verdi’s Requiem with both the Willoughby Symphony and Canberra Symphony Orchestras, Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor with the Sydney University Musical Society, and Saint Saens’ Requiem with the Sydney University Graduate Choir.

Eva has received numerous distinctions, among them first prize in the Giacomo Lauri-Volpi International Competition, a scholarship from the Vinas International Competition, semi-finalist placements in both the Belvedere and Bilbao International Competitions, finalist recognition in the McDonald’s Operatic Aria, and the Special Prize at the Bel Canto Award. Eva attained her Bachelor of Music at Hanyang University, South Korea, and continued her studies at Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a Graduate Diploma in Music.
