Richard Causer

Richard is a contemporary dance artist whose passion is driven by making 'contemporary dance' accessible, engaging and physically enjoyable to experience. 

Completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) in Australia at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 2004, he soon launched into his choreographic career by opening the 'national design conference 4um? for Advertising and Design Asia Pacific' with his first choreographic work 'Delirium' in 2005 which was presented at the Malaysian Dance Festival in the same year. 

In 2006, Richard joined Expressions Dance Company (EDC- now known as Australasian Dance Collective) touring throughout Australia and internationally, earning nominations for Most Outstanding Male Dancer for both an Australian Dance Award and a Helpmann Award. In 2011, he choreographed his own solo Wilhelm’s Scream, which earned him another nomination for Most Outstanding Male Dancer at the 2012 Australian Dance Awards. Richard again received further nominations for the same award in 2017 and 2018. Richard moved to London in 2012. This period of time saw him performing and choreographing for various contemporary dance companies in the UK and internationally. Moving back to Australia in 2016 and re-joining EDC, he continued to explore his choreographic flair creating works for Expressions Dance Company, QUT, and The Aboriginal Centre of Performing Arts (ACPA).

Richard has featured in music video clips by John Butler Trio, Darren Hayes, Powderfinger, The Living End, Megan Washington, The Sleepy Jackson, The Flaunt. Performed in various TV commercials and has been working closely with award winning Dance Film Creator Claire Marshall on her recent films ‘Ward of State’ and ‘Shift’ (currently premiering in New York for the Dance on Camera Festival 2020.

Richard has been delivering dance workshops across Australia and internationally to China, South Korea, India, Slovakia, Germany, United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. In 2019 Richard undertook an Artist in Residence at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and took on a new role at Australasian Dance Collective as Rehearsal Director. Richard is currently the creative collaborator of 'The Partnering Tool' a dance resource to aid schools in professional development in partnering techniques, and is a Co Director in the newly founded Zoom Dance’- an online class resource emerging from the current Covid19 lockdowns.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and perform. Long before we performed on this land, it played host to the dance expression of our First Peoples. We pay our respects to their Elders — past, present and emerging — and acknowledge the valuable contribution they have made and continue to make to the cultural landscape of this country.
