Professional Development Workshop: Kombumerri Dreaming Teachers Resource Kit

Spend your Term 3 Student Free Day with us. Repeated in 2026 by request, this professional learning workshop introduces teachers to the Kombumerri Dreaming Teachers Resource Kit, a classroom tool designed to support the respectful integration of a First Nations perspective into teaching and learning. Grounded in storytelling and movement inspired by a Kombumerri Dreaming story shared by Traditional Custodian Uncle Max Dillon, this session empowers educators with accessible and engaging strategies to spark creativity and deepen students’ connections to place, community, and identity. The Kombumerri Dreaming project is a collaborative initiative between Dr Beth Tailby, a Kamilaroi woman and educator, Kombumerri Traditional Custodian, Uncle Max Dillon, and Queensland Ballet’s Community and Education team.

Led by the Queensland Ballet Education team and Dr Beth Tailby, participants will take part in practical activities including guided warm-ups, storytelling, and dance-making tasks that model how to embed cultural understanding and creative expression in classroom practice. Using the free resource kit, teachers will leave equipped with ideas and approaches to confidently deliver arts learning that honours First Nations knowledge and perspectives.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop strategies to respectfully incorporate storytelling, movement, and traditions into the classroom using the Kombumerri Dreaming Teachers Resource Kit.
  • Explore accessible and engaging teaching methods that foster creativity while deepening students' connections to place, community, and identity.
  • Participate in hands-on storytelling and dance-making activities to strengthen cultural awareness and confidence in delivering First Nations content.

Mapped to Australian Professional Standards for Teachers 2.1, 2.4 and 6.2, this workshop blends creative practice with cultural learning to support meaningful, inclusive, and curriculum-aligned approaches to arts education across Foundation–Year 10.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and perform. Long before we performed on this land, it played host to the dance expression of our First Peoples. We pay our respects to their Elders — past, present and emerging — and acknowledge the valuable contribution they have made and continue to make to the cultural landscape of this country.
