Rian was born in Mackay. He began his dance training from age four at Theatre Arts Mackay where he studied a range of performing arts including drama, tap, jazz and music theatre. Rian began his ballet training at the age of fifteen.

In 2009, Rian was accepted into Queensland Ballet’s Professional Year program where he performed in Company productions.

Rian became a Trainee Dancer in 2011 and toured with the Company to China. In 2012 Rian was promoted to Company Dancer and has performed in all Company productions including Sir Kenneth MacMillans Romeo & Juliet where he performed the role of Benvolio opposite Carlos Acosta and Steven McRae.

What’s the best advice you can give to someone wanting to dance professionally?

"Dare to be different. Be someone with a personality and an imagination, that’s what is going to make you stand out to someone who is casting their ballet. Also having a life outside of ballet is the best thing, having other interests and hobbies just adds layers to your imagination."
