Gareth Belling

Gareth began his dance studies in Sydney with Sharyn Constable and Hilary Kaplan before joining Queensland Ballet’s Professional Year program in 2000. He joined the Company in 2002 and has since danced in all productions. His roles include the King of Hearts in François Klaus’s Alice in Wonderland, the Fisherman in The Little Mermaid, and Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Gareth made his choreographic debut in 2005. His choreography for the Company includes Sheer Nylon Dances, 'Hello?’ with Timothy Brown, Three Miniatures, Mourning Song and Run. Urban Myths, premièred in Vis-à-vis Studio Series 2 in 2007. He choreographed two pieces for Vis-à-vis Studio Series 1 and 2 in 2008: Steps Travelled: Mumbai and The making of…, respectively.

Gareth created his first ballet to a commissioned score in 2006: Return Economy Class was a collaboration with composer Joseph Twist and chamber music ensemble, Collusion. Gareth has also choreographed two works on Queensland Ballet Professional Year dancers, Variations and Twist, which premièred in another Collusion concert French Twist (2007). Gareth worked with Collusion again in November 2008, choreographing and partnering Elise May in Tales of the Faithful.

In 2009, Gareth choreographed his first ballet for a Queensland Ballet mainstage production: Refraction for ...with attitude 2009. In that year he also created Transference on Principal Dancer Clare Morehen and Soloist Nathan Scicluna in Vis-a-vis Studio Series 1, and Transparent, featuring Lisa Edwards and himself, in Soirees Classiques No 2. In 2011 Gareth choreographed Transition Sequences for the ...with attitude season.

In 2011 Gareth took part in JUMP, a national mentoring program for young and emerging artists; dutch choreographer Nils Christe was Gareth's mentor.

Did you know?

Gareth’s mentor is renowned choreographer Nils Christe. In 2011 Gareth attended the The Swiss International Coaching Project for Choreographers in Zurich.
