Andrew Mogrelia

Music Director and Principal Conductor

Appointed Music Director and Principal Conductor in 2013, British conductor Andrew Mogrelia’s association with Queensland Ballet began in 2008, conducting Swan Lake. Named Principal Guest Conductor in 2009, he returned each year to conduct the Company’s December season. In 2013, he will conduct CinderellaGiselle and The Nutcracker.

Andrew has conducted many of Europe’s leading orchestras, including the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and BBC Scottish Symphony in the UK; the RTE National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin; the Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam, Residentie Orchestra and Dutch Radio Symphony in the Netherlands; and the Slovak Radio Symphony and Slovak Philharmonic in the Czech and Slovak Republics. He was Conductor-in- Residence at the Birmingham Conservatoire (UK) from 1992-2002 and has worked with the National Youth Orchestra (UK & Eire) and the New Perspectives Ensemble at the Royal College of Music in London.

Andrew was co-Music Director of the Dutch National Ballet from 1992-1994 andMusic Director and Principal Conductor of the San Francisco Ballet from 2003 to 2005. He has also worked with such companies such as the English National Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Finnish National Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, The Australian Ballet, West Australian Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, and the American Ballet Theatre.

Andrew has an extensive discography, including recordings for Naxos and Marco Polo of orchestral works by Bernstein, Handel, Fibich, Suk and Novak; numerous complete ballets by Tchaikovsky, Delibes, Prokofiev and Adam; and more recently, violin concerti by Hubay and Kreutzer, and piano concerti by Castelnuovo-Tedesco, all of which have received critical acclaim.

In Australia, Andrew has conducted the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (performing Romeo and Juliet for The Australian Ballet on tour in Perth). He has also been guest conductor of the Bonyi International Music for Youth Festival in Brisbane, and given an orchestral workshop at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. 2013 includes working with the tutti world youth music festival in Beijing and a return to the RTE National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin.
