Queensland Ballet begins search for new Artistic Director

Queensland Ballet has commenced an international search for a new Artistic Director.

Queensland Ballet Chair, Adjunct Professor Joan Sheldon AM, said, “We are seeking a visionary artistic leader, choreographer and producer with an inspiring vision for our Company that builds on the achievements of the last 50 years. This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual with a passion for nurturing dancers at all levels, to champion Queensland Ballet’s journey of renewal, growth and pursuit of creative excellence.”

Over its 51 year life, Queensland Ballet has grown into a creative powerhouse. Housed in one of Brisbane’s historic buildings and with generous funding from both state and federal governments, Queensland Ballet’s high production values and growing suite of training and education programs continues to attract dancers of international calibre. Over the past decade the Company has deepened its relationship with core audiences, increased its profile through international touring and developed a highly regarded repertoire ranging from short works for children to new, full-length story ballets.

“Our challenge is to find a new Artistic Director who will lead the organisation into the next phase of its development as a leading classical ballet company with a distinctive spirit and vitality that is proudly reflective of Queensland,” comments Mrs Sheldon.

In June this year the Company announced current Artistic Director François Klaus had accepted an extension of his current employment contract, after which time he will retire as Artistic Director.

Queensland Ballet was established in 1960 and remains one of only three professional ballet companies in Australia. The Company employs 27 professional dancers, 15 staff and works with over 100 musicians, designers, choreographers and creative workers each year. Queensland Ballet also promotes and develops dance education, principally through a partnership with the Queensland Dance School of Excellence (QDSE), and its Professional Year and Junior Extension Programs which will continue to be part of the Company’s core business.
