Gemma’s early tuition was at the Christa Cameron School of Ballet. She was a semi-finalist in the 2001 Prix de Lausanne, and a recipient of the Youth American Grand Prix Finalist Scholarship in 2006. She has trained in the USA at the San Francisco Ballet School, dancing in several productions for San Francisco Ballet in 2004, including Don Quixote and The Nutcracker.
After returning to Australia, Gemma continued her training at the Ballet Theatre of Victoria in 2005. She was accepted into Queensland Ballet’s Professional Year in 2007; also in that year she danced with the Tasmanian Classical Ballet Company, where a major role was the Lead Wili in Giselle. Gemma performed in François Klaus’s 2007 productions of Carmen and The Nutcracker and was offered a contract as a Trainee Dancer with Queensland Ballet in 2008. During that year, Gemma performed in all of the Company’s productions, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Little Mermaid, International Gala 2008, …with attitude 2008 and Swan Lake. Gemma also performed the Le Corsaire pas de deux in Vis-à-vis Studio Series #3 and toured with the Company to Japan in April 2008.
Gemma was made a full Company member in January 2009. In that year she performed in Klaus's A Streetcar Named Desire, the regional tour of A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Sleeping Beauty, in which she danced the roles of the fairy "Coulante", and the Bluebird pas de deux. Her performances in The Sleeping Beauty earnt her a mention as "Dancer to Watch" in the Dance Australia magazine 2009 Critic's Survey by Courier Mail reviewer, Olivia Stewart. Gemma also danced in Nils Christe's SYNC in ...with attitude 2009 and the Company's Vis-a-vis Studio Series performances. In 2009, she toured to Denmark, Switzerland and Germany with Timeless Dances.
