World's Largest Ballet Class
How many ballerinas does it take to break a world record?
Bright and early on Sunday 22 May 2011, 1,525 ballet fans joined us at the State Library of Queensland to help us break the Guinness Record for the World's Largest Ballet Class. Despite the rain forcing us to move the class from its original location at the Kurilpa Bridge, over 1,500 ballet lovers turned up to complete a 30 minute barre class led by our wonderful Artistic Assistant Nicola Galea. A sea of tutus and other delightful costumes spread over five levels of the State Library atrium was a sight to behold.
We’ve recently received official word from the Guinness Book of Records that we beat the previous record of 1,055 held by Hannover State Opera, which we’re thrilled about!
It was a truly fabulous morning, and we were overwhelmed by the commitment and enthusiasm of the dance community who showed up to help us create history. People came from far and wide, including a lady and her daughter who flew into Brisbane from Cairns on Sunday morning especially for the class.
The event was part of the 2011 Ideas Festival, and the Ideas team were instrumental in making this special day happen. A big thanks also to all our volunteers and supporters – we couldn't have done it without you!
