Introducing Season 2009
François Klaus
Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer
We always strive to offer our audiences and dancers a program rich in diversity and quality. I do think that our 2009 season reflects this goal.
Our year is book-ended with two major ballets. The first, in March, is a completely new work, based on Tennessee Williams’ play,
A Streetcar Named Desire, with The Queensland Orchestra’s X-Collective providing the music. Expressing the drama and emotional intensity of this story is an artistic challenge which I and my dancers embrace with relish. December will see us performing an established favourite:
The Sleeping Beauty, with Tchaikovsky’s magnificent music also performed by The Queensland Orchestra.
In between these seasons, we have much to offer, including three Vis-à-vis programs, and our regular annual events,
International Gala and
… with attitude. We will have the pleasure of welcoming some outstanding guest choreographers for these two seasons.
Such was the popularity of
A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2008, we have scheduled a short reprise season of four performances. The
Soirées Classiques are amongst our most popular events, and I am very pleased that in 2009 we can present three programs in this series, for which we will engage some of Brisbane’s most talented chamber musicians, including the highly respected Southern Cross Soloists. At the Thomas Dixon Centre, we will present a new program with our young Professional Year dancers, to show not only their developing talents, but the diversity of their learning.
Of course, touring is part of our year as well, and we will take
A Midsummer Night’s Dream to audiences in seven major Queensland centres, from Cairns to Toowoomba. All of this keeps us very busy indeed; but ultimately, a constantly creative environment is what artists need to flourish and grow.
I do hope that our endeavours give you much pleasure in the coming year.
