Clare Morehen - Principal Dancer

Age: 23

Position in Company: Soloist

Length of time with Company: Four and a half years

What is your guilty pleasure? Spending a little too long in the shower! I know Queensland has water restrictions, but after a long day “in the office...”

Favourite memory: Starting my job with Queensland Ballet. It was the culmination of so many things and a new beginning. It was a full stop on my 16 years of training and a huge thank-you to my entire family (who went through so much to get me to that point). Renting my own apartment and buying my first set of Christmas presents felt like such an achievement.

Favourite movie & why: When I was 8 years old, Annie (the musical) was my favourite movie and at 14, Centre Stage, of which I knew every line. Now, I would probably say my favourite movie is Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, because it was an amazing piece of cinematography with so much detail and visual impact, although it was a little violent.
Scariest moment: Moving to a new country at age 16 to join the Royal Ballet School and not knowing what the future would bring – 2 days before my mother left the country the 9/11 tragedy occurred and we couldn’t share our last dinner together. The entire globe was on edge.

Describe your personality in one word: Perfectionist! I’m not satisfied unless I do everything to my utmost best ability, including performing.

What is your life-long dream? As a dancer I love to achieve and I thrive on a challenge. I’d love to perform In the Middle Somewhat Elevated and the title role in Manon. In life, I’d love to have a happy, healthy family with some children.

Favourite thing to do to relax: After a long hard day I love to come home and flop on the couch. I watch some awful TV and spend time with Nathan, my puppies, Jasper and Benji and my cockatiels, Sunny and Hugo.
